As the debate around the coveted number one draft pick later this year intensifies, John Worsfold says that there is a simple solution.
“Ideally we don’t finish on the bottom of the ladder, that will stop everyone worrying about that,” he said at his Tuesday press conference.
Saturday night’s loss to Fremantle has relegated Essendon to the foot of the AFL ladder and, if the Bombers remain there, the possibility of the first pick is seen by many as a light at the end of the tunnel.
The Age is reporting that the Brisbane, currently in 17th position, will lobby the AFL for a priority draft pick which could see picks one and three head to the Lions, demoting the Bombers to second.
But should the Bombers finish bottom of the ladder, Worsfold believes nothing should stop the club from taking the number one pick.
“That’s what the rules say,” he said.
“Whether we deserve it or not, the rules will allocate the draft order according to finishing positions on the ladder and there are things that the AFL takes into account.
“Whether a team has finished with only a three or four wins for a number of years in a row, I understand that the AFL have the ability to take that into account, that’s not a worry for me.”
The Essendon coach wouldn’t be drawn on his thoughts on the possibility of Brisbane’s claim.
“It's not my decision and I don’t think anyone will ask me if I care or not," said Worsfold
"The powers at be will make the decisions."
