Aaron Francis was one of the top prospects heading into last year’s National Draft.
He’s tall, but mobile and capable of playing in all three areas of the ground.
Those that watched his development through junior and then SANFL ranks also detected an ability to rise to the occasion.
“Whatever level of football Aaron has played, he’s always played to a really good standard,” West Adelaide Football Manager, Andrew Marks said after Francis was selected at pick six by the Bombers.
“He’ll make mistakes, as he did with our side at times this year, but he’ll make the most of his opportunity and stand up to whoever he’s playing against.”
Francis looked at home in his debut AFL game against Brisbane, producing an eye-catching performance that included 16 disposals and seven marks.
Fans had waited until round 18 to witness Francis on the AFL stage as niggling injuries stymied his progress.
He ended the season with three senior games under his belt and there were plenty of highlights at both AFL and VFL level.
Goals from tight angles and long distances, floating across packs to take marks and glimpses of his explosive speed gave supporters plenty to get excited about.
And it was enough confirmation for Essendon’s List Management team to offer Francis a new deal that will see him remain at the Club until at least the end of 2019.
“It feels very good to finally get it out of the way so I can focus on football for the next three years,” Francis said.
“I love the Bombers, my family loves the Bombers.
“Everyone knows my fitness levels isn’t where it should be, or where it’s required to be at AFL level and I found that out playing my three games.
“That’s my biggest area of focus and I’ll try to do everything possible to get myself fit.”
