Essendon is keeping its options open ahead of the National Draft later this year.
After having two of the top six picks in 2015, the Bombers could take another strong hand to the draft table this November.
As it stands, the Club would have the number one pick for the first time in its history, but it’s a pick Chief Executive Xavier Campbell is happy to forgo if it means the side can round off 2016 with some wins.
“It looks like we’ll have a pick between one and three or four,” he told Bomber Radio.
“There’s a lot of talk about the number one pick but, for us, whether we get pick one or pick four it probably doesn’t matter too much.
“I think our fans need to see a really competitive effort and ideally wins in the back part of the year, ideally that means we’re moving off the bottom position of the ladder.”
Essendon has added Zach Merrett, Orazio Fantasia, Jayden Laverde, Kyle Langford, Darcy Parish and Aaron Francis among others in the last three National Drafts.
Campbell said the Bombers would look at all options to maximise their return for the Club's top pick this year.
“Clearly there is a big cluster of players that are perceived to be the top pick and they’re (the List Management team) doing their work now to understand that and overlay that with our list management needs,” Campbell said.
“There will also be opportunities potentially around trading whatever your first pick is. We’re open to whatever is the best method to address our needs. For us, that could be trading, it could be looking for a more mature player; it could be looking for dual picks, who knows?
“That’s something that Adrian (Dodoro) and the group continue to work through right now, and I doubt that they’ll have a position on that for a couple more months.”
Mason Redman, the 30th overall pick in last year’s National Draft, extended his deal with the Club earlier this week.
Campbell is hopeful of announcing some more re-signings in the coming weeks.
“Mason is a fantastic young man, he’s got a really bright future at the football club,” Campbell said.
“He’s added enormous value both on the field and off the field and he’s probably ahead of where the guys forecast he would be in his first season.
“Hopefully, he is one of what will be a few re-signings that we announce over the next couple of weeks.
“I think we’ve got three or four in the pipeline and potentially a couple more that we hope to be able to announce really soon.”
