Irish recruit, Conor McKenna, will run out against the Cats this Saturday after being elevated from the Club’s rookie list.
McKenna’s third game of AFL level football comes after strong pre-season form and reliable performances for Essendon VFL.
Coaches have been impressed by the speed of his development, attributing it to his dedication and hard work on the track.
“We’re looking for a bit of excitement from Conor, he’s a powerful player,” said Worsfold
“He’s still learning the game to some degree, but his form over the pre-season and the last couple of weeks in the VFL – we’ve been pleased with.
“He’ll bring some energy, some intensity in the forward line and create some excitement for us up there and help us kick some scores.”
Recruited from County Tyrone at the end of 2014, McKenna spent the 2015 season building his skills while simultaneously learning the game playing with Essendon VFL.
His promising form was rewarded late in the year when he was upgraded from the rookie list for the final two games of the season.
McKenna showed great promise, averaging 11 disposals, two tackles, three marks and kicking two goals playing deep in the forward pocket and pushing up to a half forward position.
The 20-year-old has shown in a short period of time that he has plenty to offer the team.
A natural athlete, McKenna’s movement, read of the play and vision are among his strengths and were on display for Essendon VFL in the opening game of the season.
McKenna was one of the highlights on an otherwise disappointing day for the team, collecting 21 disposals, taking seven marks and kicking three goals.
Working closely with McKenna throughout the pre-season Head of Development and Head VFL Coach, Matthew Egan, said the second year player has earned his opportunity at a senior level.
“Conor has really demonstrated this pre-season that he deserves the chance to play with our senior team,” said Egan
“We’ve seen someone who has a natural athletic talent work really hard to understand and learn our game.
“His form in the VFL has been great and we believe that will transfer to a senior level.”
McKenna will join the squad for this Saturday's inaugural Country Game.
