John Worsfold hopes Essendon fans will be able to enjoy watching tonight’s forward group ply their trade together for a number of seasons.
The Essendon Coach named Travis Colyer, Cale Hooker, Zach Merrett, Shaun McKernan, Joe Daniher, Josh Green in the six starting positions, with Kyle Langford, Orazio Fantasia and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti also likely to spend considerable time in attack.
“The way I see this forward line potentially – if they all perform to the level required – it could be the exact same forward line you see lining up in five years time,” he said.
“The chemistry, talent and maturity in there then will be awesome to see.”
Daniher will again spearhead the Dons attacking group but this year he’ll have an All-Australian key position player and four potent small forwards by his side.
After one VFL practice match, Hooker is set to continue his career as a forward.
He excelled in defence in 2014 culminating in All-Australian honours but was moved forward en route to a maiden Crichton Medal in 2015.
Colyer, McDonald-Tipungwuti, Fantasia and Green offer speed when the ball hits the ground.
“Three or four years ago they started to build it [the forward line] around Joe Daniher when he was 18 years of age,” Worsfold said.
“Joe is going to come into his best years from now on. We’ve got Cale Hooker who has only played maybe a dozen games up forward and we’re going to see how he matches up with Joe.
“And then we’ve added some speed.
“This group of forwards could play alongside each other for a number of years.
“They’ll get better and better chemistry each time they play together.”
