He was named in the All Australian side, but Coach John Worsfold says defender Michael Hurley can go to another level in 2018.

Hurley was one of three Bombers (Joe Daniher, Zach Merrett) named in the All Australian side.

He finished sixth in the Crichton Medal count after a season that saw him record 127 more disposals than he had in any other season and register 30 or more disposals six times.

The 27 year old was also the number one ranked player in the competition for rebounds from the defensive 50.

“’Hurls’ coming straight back in and performing at the level he did was quite remarkable,” Worsfold told The Crichton Panel.

“The exciting part is that I think 'Hurls' has got another level to take his game to.

“That’s what I’m looking forward to seeing – Michael Hurley reach his absolute peak as a footballer, I don’t think we’ve seen it yet.”

Hurley's 2017 averages of 25.6 disposals, 7.7 marks and 6.9 rebounds were the highest of his career.

Essendon Captain Dyson Heppell finished third in the Crichton Medal.

Worsfold said his performances were all the more impressive given the 25 year old was on a restricted training program for part of the season.

“Dyson had an outstanding year – he played every game, which was a huge effort,” Worsfold said.

“He was a bit sore for parts of the year where he couldn’t do the full training load.

“Dyson didn’t get back to his best footy this year but he was still an outstanding contributor.

“He’s a natural leader – so that was outstanding.

“He drives the boys, he looks out for them, he wants clarity around what we’re all trying to achieve together, so the Club is in really great hands with Dyson as Captain.”
