Dons’ forward depth

The Essendon forward line was missing Cale Hooker (41 goals), Orazio Fantasia (38) and Josh Green (17). That’s three of Essendon's top six goal kickers this season.

But the Bombers still kicked 16 goals and scored more than 100 points for the 11th time this season.

James Stewart and Zach Merrett led the way with four goals, while Joe Daniher and Heath Hocking kicked two goals.

Bellchambers’ form continues

Tom Bellchambers has performed a key role for the Bombers since his return to the side in the middle of the season and his last two weeks have arguably been his best.

After 20 disposals against Gold Coast, Bellchambers collected 16 disposals, pulled down ten marks, had 38 hit outs and kicked a goal against the Dockers.

Hocking's late call-up

He had just minutes to prepare, but Heath Hocking had a big impact on the final outcome.

After coming in to the side to replace Cale Hooker, Hocking joined the forward rotation and ended the match with two goals.

His first came at the end of a five goal Essendon run in the third quarter and his second goal steadied the ship in the last quarter as the Dockers were mounting a charge.

Watson’s starring role

Jobe Watson was the centrepiece throughout much of the build up to the game against the Dockers. Tributes before and after the match drew applause and his efforts during the game also brought a smile to Bomber faces.

He collected 26 disposals, including 20 contested possessions, the most of any player on the ground.

Zaharakis’ defensive work

David Zaharakis is well known for his midfield polish but his grunt work was a standout feature against the Dockers.

His finished with six tackles and there were some key one-on-one efforts, including a battle with David Mundy inside the defensive 50, that halted the Dockers charge.

The Finals Chapter

The win over the Dockers sealed the Bombers spot in the finals after a two-year absence. The Dons will travel to Sydney to face the Swans on Saturday September 9th.
