Jobe Watson concedes it’s taking a little longer than he’d like to recover from games, but says it’s to be expected as he gets back into the rhythm of an AFL season.
The 32 year old is averaging 29 possessions per game across the first three matches of the season.
The Bombers opened their season on a warm night at the MCG, then travelled north to play Brisbane in slippery and humid conditions, before returning to the MCG to play a rain-soaked match against Carlton.
“It’s taking a little bit longer to get the body used to playing, recovering and then getting up for a game … it’s taking a little bit longer than I would have liked,” Watson said.
“But I guess it’s sort of natural given the length of time we were out of the game for.”
The Bombers travel to Adelaide this weekend to take on the undefeated Crows.
“They’re obviously playing really well. Last year they went from second to fifth in the last round, so they were right up there last year as well and they’ve continued that form,” Watson said.
“It’s a great challenge for this group and going over to Adelaide Oval ... it’s a good opportunity for the group to come together and play some good footy.”
The side the Bombers fielded last week against Carlton featured eight players Watson had played alongside fewer than five times.
“A lot of these guys we haven’t played with before so we’re building that continuity with them but it has been pleasing to see Walla, ‘Raz’ [Orazio Fantasia], ‘Langers’ [Kyle Langford] and Darcy [Parish] and a few other young guys who are playing really well,” he said.
“There is almost 50 per cent of the team you haven’t played with before so we’re building that chemistry.
“But it has been pleasing to see the advances those guys have made.”
