Brendon Goddard has shed some light on the exchange between he and Captain Dyson Heppell late in the Bombers win over Hawthorn.
With ten minutes remaining in the match and the Bombers up by 21 points, Heppell took a mark just outside the 50-metre line.
Goddard ran past to provide an option, but was ignored.
Here is Goddard’s take on how it all unfolded.
“Recognising that Dyson isn’t the longest kick … I saw an opportunity and yelled at someone else to get out of the space so I could run in,” Goddard told RSN.
“He [Heppell] didn’t give the initial handball and then Kyle Langford was in the pocket by himself, so I was then screaming at him to kick it to ‘Langers’.
“Dys did the little ‘I wanted to kick it [to Langford] but I won’t’.
“So he went back and kicked the goal at a big moment in the game and then I ran over to him and said ‘Mate, I honestly didn’t think you had that in you’, so we had a bit of a chuckle and moved on pretty quickly.”
The Bombers went on to win the match by 25 points with Heppell and Goddard both among the team’s best.
