A unique skill set and a dangerous forward mix have helped Orazio Fantasia find some impressive early season form, according to those that have watched him closely.

The 21 year old, who inked a new deal with the Club last month, booted five goals in the win over Brisbane – with four of the five coming from marks on the lead.

It takes his season tally to nine, with the 177cm forward surrounded by key position players (Josh Kennedy, Jeremy Cameron, Sam Reid and Lance Franklin) in the AFL's top five goal kickers.

Scott Lucas is Essendon’s fourth highest goal kicker of all time. He said Fantasia is benefitting from playing in a forward line with a number of dangerous options.

“He’s a dynamic player – very tough to match up on and that’s why he’s getting good match-ups and the opposition need good defenders to play on him,” Lucas said.

“He’s been a significant goal kicker which overall has been important because they’ve got many different options up forward.

“It’s hard for opposition teams to lay off because you don’t know where the ball is going.”

Joe Daniher (6), Cale Hooker (5) and midfielders Dyson Heppell (3) and David Zaharakis (3) have also been dangerous in front of goal in the first two rounds, with the Bombers kicking more than 100 points in consecutive games for the first time since 2014.

“It becomes very difficult for opposition teams to plan against you when you’re getting an even spread of contributors and you’re not entirely sure who is going to bob up each week,” Lucas said.

“We’ve seen that in the front half in particular with multiple goal kickers … there is a good mix up there.”

Brendon Goddard has played alongside Fantasia since the South Australian arrived at the Bombers at the end of 2013.

He said Fantasia’s early season form is a result of his hard work over the first few years of his career.

“When he came to the Club he had a light frame and was a bit of an unknown,” Goddard told 3AW.

“He’s worked extremely hard to get in the position he is now and he’s reaping the rewards of all of his hard work.

“When you’ve got leg speed like he does, the ability to make quick decisions, take the ball above his head and mark so well – he’s an extremely hard opponent to match up on.”
