Essendon Coach John Worsfold says he’s pleased with the way the defence held up against Gold Coast.
The Bombers were put under pressure as the Suns held the edge around stoppages (22-15) and clearances (151-114), leading to a 59-40 advantage in the inside 50’s.
Still, the Bombers conceded just three more scoring shots and went down by three points.
“It was a really mixed performance. There was some really good stuff – our ability to defend under real pressure was outstanding at times,” Worsfold said.
“Some of our rebound footy from the back half we were really pleased with.
“But the reason those things had to be good was because we were giving Gold Coast first use of the ball.
“The way the boys adjusted after half time and stepped up to the challenge of addressing that was a real positive as well.”
Essendon raced to a four goal lead half way through the first quarter, but despite the advantage Worsfold said there were some early warning signs.
“We were getting those goals from quick ball movement from the back half,” he said.
“Gold Coast were winning first possession and getting field position. It doesn’t last that long if you keep giving them the ball in their half, you’re not going to go at that efficiency for the whole game.”
Michael Hurley was the only injury concern to come out of the match for the Bombers.
The stand-in Captain hurt his ankle late in the match but Worsfold is confident it’s not serious.
The match was played in hot conditions and in front of a large crowd with plenty of Bombers fans in attendance.
“Everywhere we go around the country the Essendon fans come out and support us,” Worsfold said.
“I’m not getting surprised by it anymore.
“They were outstanding again.
“It certainly gives the players a lift and they’re really enjoying our new group coming together and what we’re striving to achieve together.”
