Brent Stanton is yet to play a home and away game under John Worsfold, but the veteran Bomber says the experience the premiership coach brings is ‘priceless’.
Entering his 14th season on the Club’s list, Worsfold will be the seventh Coach Stanton has played under.
He made his debut during Kevin Sheedy’s record reign, hardly missed a game under Matthew Knights, spent four seasons under James Hird and he also featured during the short-term tenures of Simon Goodwin, Mark Thompson and Matthew Egan.
Stanton told RSN his initial impression of Worsfold is of a Coach who doesn’t let the pressure impact the way in which he delivers his message.
“He is a very calm person and that’s the way he coaches, he finds that’s the best way to get his message across,” Stanton told RSN.
“He was a Coach for a long time before he came to Essendon, obviously a premiership Coach and Captain of West Coast – he knows how to handle different situations.
“There is no doubt there might be a little bit more intensity now with a bit more expectation, but that’s the players driving that now.
“There is a real hunger and appetite to get this Football Club back up the top where we think we can be … and who knows how long that’s going to take.
“There are going to be speed bumps along the way and I have no doubt he’ll handle that in the way he knows best.
“We’re feeding off that at the moment and the experience he brings is priceless.”
Having spent the bulk of his 248 games playing in the midfield, Stanton was used across half-back during last Sunday’s JLT Community Series match against Gold Coast.
Stanton said versatility is something Worsfold values.
“He likes to have a lot of different players who can go through different roles," he said.
“It’s just trying to add another string to my bow, obviously I’ve played a lot of my football on the wing and in the midfield.
“You’ll probably see the likes of Jobe Watson and Dyson Heppell go forward as well with the minimal rotations that we’ve got.
“These guys have been training in different positions as well and I’ve been training a fair bit down back but also going through the midfield at times.”
