The boys returned to the track today for their first full skills session of the week, as they look to prepare themselves for the game against the West Coast Eagles.
Captain Jobe Watson was vocal for the entire session urging players to make complete efforts and work on the areas that have been issues during the game over the last few weeks.
Despite winning 20 clearances on the weekend, the midfield group struggled to efficiently dispose of the ball and create opportunities for the forwards to get to the ball. The boys worked hard on this today sharpening their skills when kicking under pressure.
There was a particular focus on hitting a target within a small set zone after the intended target had broken away from a defender. This drill was also aimed at helping forwards practice making leads and strengthening their ability to provide smarter options.
Our back six once again were under constant bombardment in round 10 with the Cats having 61 inside 50s, with 13 marks and a return of 19 goals. Addressing this post-game on Saturday assistant coach Matthew Egan stressed the importance of being able to plug holes in the backline and ensure that the opposition were unable to find targets easily.
As such there was much more of a team focus on defense at training, with all players doing their best to man-up when the ball was entering our backline.
Licka trained strongly after making his return for Essendon VFL over the weekend.
Our back six also paid close attention to moving the ball out of defence and making the right decisions when disposing to midfielders.
Matthew Lloyd continued to work on goal kicking, which was an obvious issue this week. Daniher and Carlisle were joined by Pears, Ambrose and Chapman to complete goal kicking drills. Lloyd stripped his session back to the basics, urging the boys to focus on their routine and following through with their action. They were made to complete a number of shots from different angles and distances with Lloyd taking note of the scores.
Winderlich trained freely after making a positive return for Essendon VFL on the weekend. He was joined by Hocking, Myers, Zaharakis and Kommer who are all on the verge of making a return to some level of football in the coming weeks.
