Lisa Williams has been named the inaugural Essendon VFL Women’s captain as the Bombers confirmed their leadership group for the 2018 season.
The news was announced at last Tuesday night’s training session after the playing group had all lodged their votes for the positions of the leadership group.
Williams was a part of the inaugural Western Bulldogs AFL Women’s side, playing six matches in 2017 after being drafted at pick 92.
She came to The Hangar from former VFLW side Diamond Creek where she was vice-captain in 2017. The skilful winger was “speechless” after being selected as captain.
“I’m very excited by the opportunity and completely honoured to be named our inaugural captain," Williams said.
"To have the players vote me in, I’m very stoked.
“I’m really excited to see how we continue to jell on the field and see what each player individually brings, but also what we bring as a group.”
Coach Brendan Major says Williams is a perfect fit for the title of captain for the manner in which she conducts herself both on and off the field.
“It was important to have someone who has a good command over their own game,” Major said.
“Willo has really bought into the values of the program and supports our younger players whole heartedly.”
Natasha Hardy was voted vice-captain with Hayley Bullas, Kirby Hicks, Jess Trend, former Collingwood AFLW player Kendra Heil and former Western Bulldogs AFLW player Lauren Morecroft, forming the seven-player leadership group.
Essendon will play its history-making first game in round one against Hawthorn at Windy Hill on May 6.
