Essendon midfielder David Myers has highlighted the playing group’s frustration after the club’s disappointing 23-point loss to Hawthorn on Saturday.
The loss leaves the Bombers on two wins from the opening seven rounds of the season, but Myers said the side’s results do not reflect its work-rate.
“The frustration comes from the fact that we’re training so hard during the week and we’re all working on our games, and then we’re not executing on what we’re talking about and what we know we want to be doing,” Myers said post-match.
“I’m not sure how the twos went today, but guys are going to get their chance to come in and have a run that are playing their role in reserve grade and see if that translates through, because we can’t keep going the way we are.”
Myers urged Essendon fans to keep supporting the side as it looks to get its season back on track.
“We’ve got great fans and I can understand they’d be pretty frustrated at the moment, they’ve sat through us for a long time.
“We want to be playing better for them and we want to be playing better for ourselves and our families as well, but we’re not.
“We are trying, we’ll keep working and we do appreciate them turning up every week and being as vocal as they are.”
Essendon faces the winless Carlton next week and Myers said the Bombers will work as hard as ever to bounce back in what could be a season-defining match for the team.
“We’ll go back to the drawing board during the week, we’ll have a lot of hard conversations again and we won’t shy away from what we’ve been serving up.
“And we’ll crack in again during the week and try to improve as a collective and we’ll definitely be trying to put our best foot forward again next weekend.
“That’s all you can do, you’ve just got to keep working hard and trust in each other and hope it will turn.”
The Bombers once again capitulated in the third term on Saturday, turning a seven-point half-time lead into a 31-point deficit at the final change.
The experienced on-baller said he couldn’t put his finger on why the side continuously struggles in the ‘premiership quarter’.
“We’re all…disappointed that we keep serving that footy up in the third quarters,” Myers said.
“(I’m) not quite sure of the cause of it at the moment, but I’m pretty sure if you just stripped it back, we’re not playing well enough as individuals (or) as a team.
“You just need to strip it back and be able to execute under pressure and at the moment we’re not doing that, it’s pretty simple.”
Essendon faces the Blues at the MCG next Saturday afternoon.
