After a sensational inaugural season in the red and black, culminating in Crichton Medal success, anticipation was high for what Devon Smith could do in 2019.
But despite some promising moments early in the season, he soon succumbed to an ongoing knee concern and was forced to watch most of the season on the sidelines in order to have a proper pre-season ahead of 2020.
Smith’s manic pressure and intensity in the contest were again clear highlights of his game play this year, but it was ultimately a disappointing season for the reigning best and fairest.

BEST PERFORMANCE
Despite an extended stint off the field due to a concussion test, Smith was at his best against Melbourne in round three when the club broke through for its first win of the season.
Smith relished the contested nature of the game, gathering 15 disposals, seven inside 50s and laying nine bone-crunching tackles, while he also had an impact on the scoreboard with two goals and a goal assist.
MIGHTY MOMENT
The best moment of Smith’s season came in the same game when he booted his second major of the match late in the third term.
The seesawing game was right in the balance and the tough midfielder cashed in on Essendon’s momentum with two goals in three minutes, the second of which was an absolute cracker.
Michael Hurley launched a massive bomb inside 50 with a little over five minutes remaining in the third quarter but intended target Tom Bellchambers was muscled under the ball.
Smith read the ball better than anyone and pounced on the opportunity by sprinting past his opponents like they were tied down to gather the loose ball at a million miles an hour and burst clear of Demon Christian Salem before snapping truly on his left foot.
2020 VISION
Smith is expected to take part in a full pre-season ahead of 2020 and that will put him in very good stead next year.
The loss of the inside bull had a significant impact for the side this year and if he can stay on the park throughout the season and return to his best football, he could provide a massive boost as the Dons look to take the next step.
