Essendon Victorian Wheelchair Football League star Caleb Logan says the top-of-the-ladder Bombers have “jelled really quickly” as they look to claim their first premiership.
The 21-year-old is confined to a wheelchair after being born with spina bifida, but he has always been active, playing basketball at a high level having also tried his hand at tennis and track racing.
Time spent goal umpiring helped quench Logan’s thirst for football before he jumped at the opportunity to don the sash last year, as a massive Essendon fan, in the league’s inaugural season.
The Bombers took some time to settle in last year, finishing fourth in the five-team league, but a significant off-season saw the side add plenty of talent to its squad.
“The first season wasn’t too bad, but we only won two games for the year.
“Since then the team has come along really well, we’ve jelled really quickly.”
The new-look line-up is littered with stars, with Logan among the four Bombers that made up half of the Victorian representative side in April’s 2019 Wheelchair Aussie Rules National Carnival.
“Most of our list went to Adelaide for the nationals this year, so it really helps to have that experience and it helped us jell together as well.”
The 2019 season has started brilliantly for those in the red and black, with the Dons now sitting two games clear at the top of the ladder, undefeated from three games.
A 38-point defeat of St Kilda kicked off the season before the Bombers proved too strong once again against Richmond in round two, prevailing by 27 points.
Logan celebrates one of five goals against the Saints.
The latest victory, an eight-point defeat of Collingwood, was the Magpies’ first ever loss on the court.
“It was a tight one against Collingwood. A couple of decisions didn’t go our way towards the end and it got a bit heated, but we didn’t let it get to us,” Logan said.
Logan was the star of the show, eight goals to take his season tally to a remarkable 20 from the trio of matches, behind only gun Saint Ryan Smith (24 goals).
Despite his sensational efforts, Logan said there is still room for improvement in his game.
“My personal performance has been pretty good. I’ve missed some set shots, but that happens.”
Essendon’s next assignment is a battle with bottom-placed Hawthorn at Boroondara Sports Complex on Sunday, June 16.
