He grew up an Essendon fan and on draft night Kobe Mutch received a phone call from one of his heroes.

The Bendigo Pioneers player was selected by the Bombers with the 42^nd overall pick.

That night Jobe Watson gave Mutch a call to welcome him to the Club and just a few days later the new teammates were slugging it out side by side during the Dons pre-season camp at HMAS Cerberus.

“I’ve been thrown into the deep end straight away, this camp has really tested our resilience towards coping with some extreme physical activity,” Mutch said.

“It has been tough but I’ve enjoyed every bit of it.  All of the boys are getting around us and making us feel welcome which is good.

“Over time as we progress into training it will become a lot easier, but they’ve all been great and they seem like good fellas.”

Mutch could have been picked up by GWS as one of their Academy players but the Giants opted not to match Essendon’s bid.

He averaged 25 possessions across three games during the National Under 18’s carnival for NSW/ACT.  His performances were recognised with All-Australian selection.

“It has been a whirlwind week,” Mutch said.

“Leading up to the draft there was a few nervous days and when Essendon bid on me, it was crazy and I couldn’t belive it.

“I think I’m a balanced midfielder that can play inside and out.  I can kick on both feet so that’s probably my strength. 

“I like to work hard hand get to as many contests as I can to get the footy.”
