Essendon can confirm Devon Smith will miss the rest of the 2019 season due to a knee injury.
After consultation with a specialist, the club confirmed the midfielder would require surgery on his trochlear, underneath the kneecap. Smith had also suffered from PCL deficiency, so the decision was made to address both injuries through surgery.
General manager of football Dan Richardson said Smith’s recovery would be approximately six months.
“Scans revealed a new lesion within Devon’s knee, following our clash with Sydney in round eight,” Richardson said.
“After recent and thorough consultation with a specialist and our medical team, the decision was made in Devon’s best interest to undergo surgery and treat both injuries.
“Although it’s disappointing that Devon will miss the remainder of the year, ultimately the decision was made to ensure Devon’s longevity as a footballer.
“While Devon will be missed on-field, he will continue to support the playing group, with his leadership and game knowledge remaining an important part of the group's development.
“Devon is an incredibly professional athlete and we know he will dedicate himself to his rehabilitation program over the next few months, with the full support of the entire club.”
