Essendon VFL played out a promising hit-out against Footscray at Whitten Oval on Saturday, with the Dogs running out victors 13.12 (90) to 11.4 (70).

Blustery conditions played a big factor in the fixed 25-minute quarter setup, with the Dogs' three-goal effort against the breeze in the third term ultimately proving the difference-maker.

Experienced AFL-listed Dons Will Setterfield and Peter Wright were key performers in the first half, with Wright registering a few shots on goal early and Setterfield providing his typical grunt work at clearances, including a terrific snap from the pocket in the first term - each were rested after half time.

The Dons gave up five goals to the Dogs in the second quarter, who capitalised better on their wind advantage and took that momentum throughout the second half.

Despite some bursts of strong responses, including a five-goal third term of Essendon's own which threatened to throw the game back on their terms, conceding the breeze in the final quarter proved too much of an obstacle to overcome.

Jared Eckersley starred for the Bombers with four goals - his move into more of a key forward role halfway through last season looks like it could continue into 2025, with his aggression in the air a standout.

Will Hoare stood tall in defence, while Xavier O'Neill competed strongly through the midfield in the absence of Jackson Hately.

Young ruck-forward draftee Kayle Gerreyn enjoyed the opportunity to lead the ruck stocks for the majority of the contest and got forward late to add his first goals in the colours. Tyler Sellers also hit the scoreboard after presenting well for most of the afternoon.

Essendon VFL will take on Geelong in a curtain raiser to the AFL AAMI Community Series clash at GMHBA Stadium on Tuesday, February 25 - the match will be covered with live updates via @EssendonVFL on X.
