Zach Merrett has continued his strong start to the season with another polished performance.
The 20 year old picked up 32 possessions, laid eight tackles and kicked two goals in the Bombers win over Melbourne.
Fellow young players Joe Daniher (15 marks, two goals), Darcy Parish (21 possessions, eight tackles) and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (20 possessions) also played crucial roles.
Merrett said Coach John Worsfold told the team to soak up the win before preparing for their next challenge.
“It was obviously to enjoy the moment – one of our core values is enjoyment and fun, so it’s a time to relax and enjoy the moment after the game,” Merrett said.
“But obviously we’re looking forward to Port Adelaide in six days time so there will be a real focus on recovery and getting up for that game.”
The Bombers had 128 more possessions than the Demons and used the ball at 80 per cent efficiency.
“I think it’s just been something building – we’ve only spent three or four months together as a whole so the more and more we play together, each quarter we play we’re getting better and better so it’s a very exciting time,” Merrett said.
Merrett also paid tribute to the strong Essendon crowd that attended the match.
“I saw there were ten thousand people march this ‘arvo’, so they were very vocal today and it was greatly appreciated,” he said.
“Hopefully they can keep getting down to watch our games.”
