A maiden club Best and Fairest marked a deserving reward for Maddi Gay in 2024.

The 28-year-old’s career-best AFLW campaign came in her first season with the Bombers, making immediate impact in defence and quickly establishing herself as an important leader in a young side.

For Gay, the honour served as kudos for her efforts and a reminder of the journey not only for her individual career, but the support network around her.

“I’m obviously super excited but just so overwhelmed at the moment,” Gay said.

“I didn’t expect it, but it just gives me a good tap on the back for the effort I’ve put in for the past few years and this year, to play the whole season was really rewarding.

“After jumping off stage, my mum gave me a massive hug and she was just in tears because it means a lot to not only me, but my circle. You don’t think this would happen and to have it happen is just unbelievable, it probably won’t hit me for a little bit.

“I’m just taking it all in and having a big breath at the moment.”

The fresh start this season was integral for Gay, who’d experienced her share of injury troubles at her former club Melbourne.

In her winner’s speech, Gay admitted to losing some passion for her game over the past few years, which returned in spades upon relocating to the NEC Hangar.

“I just had lots of different injuries and it takes that mental toll,” Gay said.

“Having new exercises and learning more about my body started that fresh mindset.

“To come into a new program, having them open their arms to give me a massive hug and just let me be me was really exciting, that’s what helped me show my performance on the field. I can’t thank the team and coaching staff enough.”
