It’s been a prominent few weeks on Essendon’s pathways front, particularly through the James Hird Academy.
JHA prospect Isaac Kako starred for Vic Metro in their thrilling one-point win over Vic Country in the National Championships Grand Final a fortnight ago, booting three goals from 12 touches and adding to what’s been a strong campaign from the 18-year-old.
Over the weekend, Kako also provided a spark for the Calder Cannons in their 36-point win over Bendigo in the Coates Talent League. Fellow JHA talents Jayden Nguyen and Hussien El Achkar also featured, with Nguyen finishing among the best for the away side.
Father-son prospect Noah Caracella also played a strong hand in the Geelong Falcons’ 70-point win over Oakleigh, finishing in the best players and continuing his consistent form this season.
Essendon VFL’s round 15 win over Port Melbourne saw the debut of another JHA member in Ryan Eyre, who gathered 12 touches and five marks as the 23rd player, looking comfortable in his first game at the level.
Eyre joins a growing list of Academy graduates to feature for the Bombers via the VFL in the last two seasons, including Luca Alessio, Amin Naim, Mahmoud Taha and Matthew Foley (who’s appeared in every game this season).
On Monday, July 22, the JHA hosted its Flight Squad clinic at the NEC Hangar, where the specified 12-15 age group participated in a skills session under the guidance of AFL-listed Bomber Dylan Shiel.
The night also provided a great opportunity for past players to connect at the clinics, with names such as Gary Moorcroft, Mark Johnson and father-son duo Ken and Mark Fraser in attendance.
