James Hird yet again rose to the occasion of Anzac Day and proved he thrives on performing in big games. The skipper led his team to a 33-point victory and in the process won his third Anzac Day Medal. Today’s match was a hard fought battle between two traditional rivals desperate for the four points. But it was Essendon that persevered and came out victorious.
Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy will let his players know that the football world – and in particular Collingwood – don’t think his side can play in the wet. ""I’ll go and tell our team that Collingwood is bagging our wet weather football – that’s just what I needed. Thanks for letting me know about that,"" Sheedy said.
