Essendon’s VFL program has secured another exciting young talent with the signing of Jared Eckersley.

Formerly of the Gold Coast SUNS Academy, Eckersley joins ex-Saint Jack Peris in committing to the Bombers for the 2024 season after a busy few months of recruiting.

The 19-year-old successfully locked down a spot in the SUNS’ VFL side last season, playing an important role in their Grand Final victory over Werribee.

Eckersley is keen to start a new chapter at the Bombers in 2024.

“I’m really keen to be heading interstate to join Essendon this season. The facilities here are elite and I feel it’s the best spot for me to continue my development at this early stage of my career,” Eckersley said.

“Getting the experience of a VFL premiership with Gold Coast last year held me in really good stead and I’m looking to take that into the new year with this exciting group.”

Standing at 192cm and slick with the footy at ground level, Eckersley will provide a big frame and inside presence for the Dons’ midfield mix.

Throughout the pre-season, Eckersley was one of six VFL-listed Bombers who received the opportunity to train with the club’s AFL squad during main sessions, putting together a strong block of elite-level practice prior to Christmas.

AFL Talent and Operations Manager Matt Rosa is confident Eckersley can impact in red and black this season.

“It’s exciting to have Jared on board this year, he’s a big-bodied midfielder whose size, strength and clean hands have been a real feature over the pre-season,” Rosa said.

“Our development coaches have done a great job in setting an environment where players are constantly learning and building connections, and Jared has slotted in really well so far.

“Jared has a real willingness to work and keep getting better as a player, so we’re looking forward to seeing his growth throughout the season.”
