Kobe Mutch is in the mix to make his AFL debut this Sunday against Fremantle.

The 42nd pick from last year’s National Draft is one of seven players named on the Bombers extended bench.

The final four spots in the 22 to take on the Dockers will be announced on Friday.

If Mutch does make the final side, he’ll enter the game in good form having averaged 21 disposals across the first three rounds of the VFL season.

“He really covers the ground well, uses the ball on both sides of his body and has had an impact in VFL games for us, mainly playing on a wing,” Essendon Coach John Worsfold said.

“Kobe really deserves his spot in the squad and he’s pushing really hard for selection.”

Fellow draftee, Andrew McGrath, will be rested this weekend.

He’s played in all six AFL matches so far, averaging 20 disposals across half back.

“He’s made outstanding progression and development … playing in round one – a really big, emotional game for the footy club – and obviously the ANZAC Day win,” Worsfold said.

“He’s had a nice taste of AFL footy in the first six rounds.

“We’ve seen him improving and growing in belief and confidence week on week.

“This feels like it’s the right time for him just to freshen up and be ready for what’s ahead.”

James Stewart could make his Essendon debut this Sunday after 18 games with GWS.

James Kelly, Brent Stanton, Matthew Leuenberger, David Myers, Michael Hartley and Aaron Francis are the other inclusions in the squad.

Jobe Watson and Ben McNiece have been rested alongside McGrath.

Mitch Brown misses through injury, while Tom Bellchambers was left out.
