Essendon has three Legends, one Coach and 17 players currently in the Hall of Fame.
But which Bomber will be the next to be inducted?
Nine of the 25 Champions of Essendon are yet to be included in the AFL Hall of Fame.
John Birt is among them. The rover played 193 games for Essendon, including two premierships in 1962 and 1965. He played in four Grand Finals overall and was a three time best and fairest winner.
Mark Harvey is ranked number 18 on the Champions of Essendon list. He was a three-time premiership player and two time All-Australian.
Fred Baring played in four Essendon premierships throughout his 155 game career for the Club in the early 1900’s.
Kevin Sheedy’s coaching feats saw him inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008.
The AFL has elevated 26 inductees to Legend status since the opening of the Hall of Fame in 1996. The AFL says ‘individuals are selected for Legend status if they have caused the game to change significantly for the better’.
There can be no doubt Kevin Sheedy has done just that.
And 50 years on from his debut with Richmond, 2017 shapes as the perfect time to officially acknowledge Kevin Sheedy as a Legend of the AFL.
