Essendon is likely to be without ruckman Sam Draper for its round 15 clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium.
The 24-year-old has been battling soreness after being subbed out in the Bombers’ round 13 win over Carlton.
After being listed as a test this week, GM of Performance Daniel McPherson said the club won’t rush Draper back if he’s not 100 per cent.
“Sam’s been managed through some soreness which he’s carried throughout the last couple of games,” McPherson said.
“He’s been on light duties this week, and as Brad (Scott) alluded to earlier today in his press conference, Drapes is more unlikely than likely to play this week.
“We’ll give him until selection tomorrow before making a final decision.”
It’s a similar story with midfielder Dylan Shiel, who’s been ruled out of making a return this week.
After pulling up sore following round 12, the midfielder will be given an extra week to ensure a full recovery.
“We don’t want to take any chances with ‘Dyl’,” McPherson said.
“He’s had a persistent foot issue for a few weeks now, so rather than rushing him back, taking advantage of an extra week on top of the bye gives him the best chance to be fully fit heading into the back half of the season."
Essendon confirmed last night mid-season recruit Jaiden Hunter was sent for scans for a full assessment on a recurring back complaint. Scans revealed he has a back stress fracture and could miss the remainder of the AFL season.
Hunter's injury was sustained prior to joining Essendon despite clearing independent AFL medical assessment ahead of the AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.
