The AFL Community Camp is part of a national program that will see all 16 AFL Clubs in regional and remote communities across Australia, giving locals an opportunity to get close to AFL at the highest level.
The Bombers’ camp will involve team training as well as free activities including Superclinics, community visits and a Community Footy Forum for local sports club administrators, coaches, umpires, players and medical trainers. A fundraising dinner will raise money for junior football in the region.
""The Community Camp offers our club a fantastic opportunity to assist with game development in the North, but also to thank our many Essendon fans in the region by a number of activities where they can interact with our players and coaching staff,"" Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said.
The Bombers will take part in a Community Footy Forum on Tuesday night, February 6, sharing ideas and knowledge with local sports officials and players from all sports. The event is free but bookings are recommended as space will be limited. For more information call: 08 8945 2224.
Wednesday and Thursday will see the team visit local schools and a number of remote communities outside of Darwin, including Tiwi Islands. The Tiwi visit, to be held on Thursday 8 February, will include a youth forum to be facilitated by Essendon players including captain Matthew Lloyd.
Children in the region will have the opportunity to meet the stars of the game during a giant Superclinic. Kids will learn the basic skills of AFL and have time to collect autographs or simply chat to their heroes.
And to round-off the Camp, Essendon will take part in the biannual Indigenous All Stars match, 7pm, Friday February 9, at TIO Stadium. Tickets are now available at the Darwin Entertainment Centre.
