Some of Essendon's more experienced players have found their feet quickly under new Senior Coach Brad Scott.
With a fresh game plan and belief, a lot of the Bombers' middle-aged players are producing career-best form.
Captain Zach Merrett has seen this improvement first hand and is backing in his teammates to continue playing their best footy, praising Scott for maximising the team's potential as they continue to grow.
"Brad was really keen to explore what he already had," Merrett told Fox Footy's On the Couch.
"Andrew McGrath going back to half back has been great.
"Kyle Langford's ability to play all positions has been particular impressive."
A philosophy of playing the group to their strengths and placing a focus on gameday performance has allowed for the players to reap the rewards and build in confidence.
Defender Andrew McGrath is prime example of this, with the Vice-Captain producing career-high numbers in metres-gained while also leading the AFL in bounces, capitalising on his rebounding strengths.
Mason Redman (21.1 disposals), Jayden Laverde (7.1 marks) and Will Setterfield (21.4 disposals) all also fit this description with the middle aged players really making the most of their opportunity, playing their best footy to date.
"Brad is maximising those middle-aged guys and not gifting young players games has really upped the ante around the group," Merrett said.
"His message to myself was to be yourself and play the best footy you can.
"I went about my pre-season about coming back being as fit as I could and improving in a lot of areas."
The group isn't resting on their laurels, however, with the players understanding that there is still a lot of work to be done in all areas.
"There is a lot of work to be done in all areas still but we I think it looks more structured and connected on game day," Merrett said.
“We are starting to play a brand that is recognisable.
"We have plenty of talent but turning that into capability is the funnest part of the job."
