Essendon has finalised their 2022 draft selections with Alwyn Jnr and Jayden Davey joining the club as father-son picks, while also selecting Lewis Hayes in the second round of the NAB AFL Draft.
With pick No.25 securing defender Hayes, Alwyn Jnr arrived at the NEC Hangar with pick No. 45, Jayden with pick No. 54 and passed on their pick No.59.
Alwyn Jnr and Jayden are the sons of former Bomber Alwyn Davey, who played 100 games for Essendon throughout his seven-year career.
The Bombers matched Hawthorn’s bid at pick No.45 for Alwyn Jnr, while the Bombers secured Jayden with pick No.54.
Alwyn Jnr is an exciting player who can play up forward and through the midfield, using his speed and agility to evade opponents.
The 18-year-old lined up for Vic Metro for every game throughout National Championships, standing out against Western Australia with 19 disposals, five inside 50s and two goals.
At NAB League level, Alwyn Jnr impressed for the Oakleigh Chargers and made his VFL debut for Essendon in round 21 against Werribee, where he kicked an impressive goal.
Alwyn Jnr told Fox Footy that he was thrilled to follow in his Dad’s footsteps.
“It will be an unreal experience and I know Dad is very proud that we are going to be donning the sash again for a few more years so I’m just very excited to get to the club now," Alwyn Jnr said.
“Very excited [about Alwyn senior’s 100 games] and happy about that, but I think he is a bit more happy that he got to that milestone.”
Like his brother and father, Jayden has an exciting flare to his game.
Jayden is a speedy small forward who can apply defensive pressure through attack and move through congestion with poise.
The 18-year-old missed this year due to undergoing his second knee reconstruction.
Both Davey twins boarded at Xavier College in Melbourne and have been a part of the Bombers’ James Hird Academy.
Jayden told Fox Footy that he can’t wait to represent the Bombers alongside his twin brother.
“I was 100% nervous but the excitement kicked in as well when Alwyn’s name first got picked out but it’s a very proud moment to be by his side and to get the privilege now to play with him will be very special as well,” Jayden said.
“My first memories [of the Bombers] were seeing big names like Jobe Watson and Fletcher, the list goes on of players how many great players have been there, so to finally now represent that as well, not only just for Al and me but also my Dad and Mum."
Joining the Davey brothers through pick No. 25 is Vic Metro product Hayes, a tall defender with excellent composure.
At 197cm, Hayes uses his height, combined with his football smarts, to read the play and then contest in the air, regularly intercepting opposition forward entries.
The 17-year-old averaged 21 disposals this year at NAB League level, with 89 per cent kicking efficiency, making him a key pillar of the Eastern Ranges defence.
Hayes will join his brother Sam at AFL level, a ruck for Port Adelaide.
General manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said it was a proud moment for the club to sign the Davey twins officially.
“To draft Alwyn senior and now get the twins through the door, it’s huge for our football club and they are bona fide talent and very exciting players,” Dodoro said.
“Alwyn had a great year this year for Vic Metro and many people had him in the first round of the draft, so we’re pretty lucky.
“Jayden, he is just an outstanding talent. Unfortunately, he copped a knee injury but we are going to take our time and get him right.”
Essendon senior coach Brad Scott said Hayes will be a great addition to the Bombers' defensive stocks.
“Lewis plays his best football in the big games. He is 199cm and still growing. The big modern forwards are 200cm plus and you look at someone like ‘Reidy’ (Zach Reid), who is 204cm, so Lewis coming in is a really big key defender,” Scott said.
“He can play on the big guys but he also intercepts the ball really well and is a really strong mark. He is courageous, goes when he needs to so he is a really exciting talent to bring in.”
Essendon’s draft period continues tomorrow with the NAB AFL Rookie Draft which will be held from 3pm.
