New recruit Sam Weideman has been loving his fresh start at the Bombers this pre-season.
Traded to Essendon from Melbourne for pick No.37, the 25-year-old has revelled in his new surroundings.
The 25-year-old played 59 matches across his seven years at Melbourne, kicking 62 goals.
Weideman, along with fellow trade recruit Will Setterfield, both came back early to join the first week of pre-season training.
“This team is really excited for what’s to come, and being a new player coming into the group, it’s very welcoming and it’s a good place to be,” Weideman said.
“I’m not coming in as an 18-year-old so that helps, knowing how to train and knowing how to be an AFL footballer.”
At 195cm, Weideman comes into the side as an experienced key forward, hoping to complement the outstanding work of Crichton medallist and ruckman Peter Wright.
Wright, a high draft pick like Weideman, moved from Gold Coast to Essendon after his career hit a standstill. Since then, he has become an integral member of the team, playing week in, week out.
Weideman said he's been inspired by Wright's career turnaround and wants to emulate that success.
“I’ve taken a lot of confidence out of that,” Weideman said.
“I think being in the same space for a while can get a bit stale, so now it’s a bit of a breath of fresh air, I’m loving it, it’s been a great start.”
“Coming in with no expectations on yourself and a fresh start… is going to do me a world of good.”
