Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti’s rise from VFL player, to rookie, to AFL debutant will be complete this weekend when he runs out for his first game.
‘Walla’ was upgraded to the senior list late today and will make the trip to Queensland to take on the Gold Coast Suns.
Coach John Worsfold said Walla’s selection comes after years of hard work.
“Obviously his first thing was to show an attitude that he wanted to be an AFL player – to prepare himself physically really and mentally to play at the level,” Worsfold said.
“He’s done everything right in that regard through the pre-season.
“His conditioning is outstanding and he really adds a bit of excitement to the line-up and he’s earned his spot in the team.”
Walla played in the TAC Cup with Gippsland before joining the Bombers VFL program.
“He’s a kid who’s persevered,” List and Recruiting Manager Adrian Dodoro said.
“All of the physical attributes he had four years ago are unrecognisable now.
“He’s fit – he’s always been a really smart player. He’s a crowd favourite, he’s tough and he uses the ball really well.
“There is no reason why he can’t play for a number of years at the Club.”
Walla will be among a host of players running out in their first game for the Bombers.
Coach John Worsfold said the match against the Suns would be another step in this new group coming together.
“We’re prepared but the big focus for us is getting out there and competing, and learning about each other and slowly building a tight knit unit,” Worsfold said.
