""I think it is important to understand this is the third recurrence that Adam has been faced with,"" Jackson explained.
""It’s not a cancer that spreads through the body, it’s a cancer that grows locally but it is nevertheless cancer.""
Since the announcement of his recurrence last month, five international specialists have been working with people in Melbourne to determine the best course of treatment for Ramanauskas.
""The risk of this is where it is growing. From my understanding, if it was growing in another part of the body, surgery could potentially cure this thing once and for all,"" Jackson said.
""The problem is where it is. The risk for Adam is there is not enough margin from vital tissues and structures for the body to ensure that surgery alone can fix it.""
As a result, it has been recommended that Ramanauskas undergo treatment including surgery later this week He will have a two to three week break after the surgery before starting chemotherapy treatment.
""It will be one of three new generation drugs that are being trialed in Melbourne. At this point in time we have no idea of how long the chemo will last or what the impact will be,"" Jackson said.
Despite the difficult battle ahead and a football career that is on hold, Ramanauskas remains extremely positive.
""It’s going to be tough, there is no doubt about it. It’s probably going to be a lot more complicated than the last couple of times I have dealt with it,"" Ramanauskas said.
""But in saying that, it is probably a better game plan this time. But I think it is going to be along year to say the least.
""My main objective is to get better and that’s pretty much all there is to it. It’s one of those things where you just can’t do anything about it, it’s a battle, it’s going to be a fight but its inevitable that it happens to people all over the world.
""I think I am more optimistic about it and I think you have to be. If you don’t believe that there is going to be a cure well ones not going to come up.""
