Mark McVeigh is often described as a spiritual leader at Essendon and in 2008 he took his game to another, more influential level according to Bomber fans.

He played just 14 games after being struck down by a hamstring injury but that did not stop the fans giving him a 8.27/10 report card rating, up from a very healthy 7.99/10 in 2007.

The 27-year-old has played 176 games for the Bombers since being selected with pick 9 in 1998.

This is what the fans had to say about McVeigh’s 2008 season:

Richard Purcell - Was VERY surprised that Mark did not poll better than he did in the B&F. I think he has stamped himself as a future captain of the club, showing on-field leadership.

Anthony Creswell - I (personally) think that this has been Mark's best season in a long time. If he hadn't missed eight games, he would've won the B&F.

David Street - I thought this was his best season. His energy was directed more towards the ball & his game lifted as a result. I feel he was playing well enough to win the B&F if he hadn't got injured.

Alan Betts - Now fully matured as a class midfielder. Only injuries prevented him his best season and probably the b & f.

Rod Ansell - Mark really took a step forward and took responsibility from where Hird left off. He led by example with his attitude and determination and gave a spark to the team. His contribution was missed when he was injured later in the year. Now that he has set such a high standard the pressure will be on to repeat in 2009.

Jared Byrne - Bloody awesome, bad run with injuries.

Nicholas Morrey - Had a magnificent year and if he hadn't got injured he would have polled even better in the Brownlow and the Crichton. Has turned the corner and is now a leader and an important player at the club.

Cameron Gliese - Stepped up to become one of the premium midfielders of the comp. Chance for the Brownlow if he can play 20+ games.

Brendan Burnie - Injuries hurt us big time and none more than Spike sitting out for eight games. Has excelled over the past three years and is handling all the attention he gets from the opposition while winning his fair share. We've got to keep this bloke on the track if we won't to win more games.

Glenn Currie - Mark has definitely matured into a courageous, passionate bombers player. He is now one of the leaders at the club and I believe needs more support from Watson and Stanton in 2009.

Colin Duck - Mark has now reached his full potential and just needs to keep working on his temper!

Didier LeGall - Mark has been our best and most important player. Break-out year despite injuries. Great leadership. Should be our next captain.

Ryan Smith - It was odd that we were winning games, as soon at Mark got injured, we started to lose, when he came back, we started to win again. If he wasn’t injured it would have been great!

Emily Paton - Took his game to the next level this season. Hopefully he can get through next year injury free. If he can he'll lead the club back to the top.

Joseph Attard - A great year from Mark McVeigh, He started the year well with winning the Archer-Hird Medal. Although his year was interrupted by injury, he still was crucial in the Bomber line up.

Kimberly Purcell - Absolutely fantastic season, Great leadership skills shown (a captain in the making). It's a shame there was a five week injury period, as we may have been looking at the 2008 Brownlow Medallist. Keep up the great work in 2009....Go Bombers!
