Essendon forward Nick Kommer is set to miss Saturday night's clash against Richmond after breaking his hand during Saturday night’s win against Carlton.

Football Operations Manager Steve Alessio confirmed Kommer would not line up against the Tigers on Saturday night and would require surgery to repair the break.

“Nick has broken his hand, he will be going in for surgery this week and will have that hand plated,” Alessio said.

“That will be plated this week and he will miss this weekend’s game definitely.”

The club could welcome back a number of players for Saturday night’s clash with Jason Winderlich, Travis Colyer and Scott Gumbleton all to push for a senior recall.

“We have a few guys in Jason’s boat where they are coming back from soft tissue injuries,” Alessio said.

“Jason trained strongly last week and the expectation is if he can get through training this week he will be available for senior selection.”

“If they can get through training this week those three guys will be available for senior selection.”

Dyson Heppell remains in doubt for Saturday night’s clash as he recovers from a foot injury.

“He is going to go and get another opinion on his foot and we are hoping for a good outcome from that otherwise we just have to wait and see what the surgeon has to say about it,” Alessio said.

David Myers and Joe Daniher had general check ups on Monday morning but both are expected to be fit to play.

Courtenay Dempsey took positive steps in his recovery from a hamstring strain taking to the training track for the first time since the injury occurred.

“Courtenay has started his running program from his hamstring injury which is really encouraging,” Alessio said.

“He is moving really well and feeling good so that is some good news.”
