Dear members,
I write to you on the eve of our first home game for the 2019 season.
It gives me great pleasure to formally announce the appointment of Mr Peter Allen to the Essendon Football Club Board. Peter was unanimously endorsed to join the board as a nominated director, effective immediately.
Peter is the current executive director and chief executive officer of Scentre Group. Prior to the establishment of the Scentre Group in 2014, Peter was an executive officer and chief financial officer of Westfield Group. He joined Westfield in 1996 and between 1998 and 2004, was Westfield’s CEO of the United Kingdom and Europe, responsible for establishing Westfield’s presence in the United Kingdom.
A lifelong Bombers supporter, Peter’s vast commercial acumen and entrepreneurial experience will be a significant asset to the club’s board.
I would also like to take this opportunity to provide a brief update on the progress of Windy Hill and our expansion at The Hangar.
When we made the move from our spiritual home of Windy Hill to our world-class facilities at The Hangar, we committed to redeveloping the precinct for future generations to enjoy.
Our old suburban home ground Windy Hill is an iconic venue within the City of Moonee Valley. We know there has been significant growth in the Moonee Valley municipality and neighbouring regions in Victoria, and an increased demand for sporting and recreation spaces, which had led to the establishment of the Imagine Windy Hill project.
This has recently launched through the Moonee Valley City Council. We are proactively seeking to understand how our members and supporters envisage the use of the Windy Hill facility for the long-term, remembering that this site if for the “recreation of the people”. Our members and supporters have a very important role to play in putting forward their ideas for the project, so I strongly encourage you to submit your suggestions to the Imagine Windy Hill project by clicking here.
Over the past 12 months, we have been developing stage two plans for the expansion of The Hangar, and we remain on track to commence the project later this year, pending the fulfillment of our funding strategy.
On this note, we continue to progress our positive discussions with the Victorian State Government regarding a partnership to support the project, and will also shortly be providing our members with an exciting opportunity to be involved in the development.
Finally, our playing group will be looking to respond on Saturday afternoon against St Kilda after a disappointing performance last weekend. We are confident they will bounce back and return to the exciting brand of football the Essendon Football Club is known for.
On behalf of everyone at the club, thank you to our 70,000 members for your continued support. I look forward to seeing you at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
Go the Mighty Bombers.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Tanner
President
