The AFL and Essendon’s oldest coterie group, Essendonians, will celebrate its 60th anniversary this weekend.
The Essendonians was unofficially formed in the mid-1950’s by a group of Patrons who offered various support to the clubs and players. From employment opportunities and housing assistance, the sole purpose of the Essendonians was to and still is to provide unequivocal support to the Essendon Football Club.
In 1960, the unofficial group of patrons became a legitimate group by electing Maj.Gen Simpson as President and Dr. G Grove as Secretary.
Over the past 60 years, the Essendonians have engaged over 400 members and appointed over 13 presidents.
Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell congratulated the group on their milestone anniversary and recognised their contribution to the Essendon Football Club.
“On behalf of everyone at the club, I’d like to congratulate the Essendonians on their 60th anniversary,” Campbell said.
“This is a significant moment for any coterie group and reflects the hard work of many volunteers over the past six decades.
“The Essendonians’ impact on the club has been tremendous, and their support is greatly appreciated.”
