Essendon VFL will look to take what they learnt last weekend against Casey into this Sunday’s huge match against Williamstown at Windy Hill.
The Bombers are coming off an 86-point loss to Casey on Saturday night, but VFL forward coach Paul ‘Harry’ Corrigan believes there were a couple of things to take away from the contest.
“It was disappointing, we went into it knowing they were playing some pretty good footy and knowing that it was going to be a good challenge,” Corrigan said.
“I guess for us we are hoping it’s another learning curve of where we need to get to be competitive with the top sides in the VFL.
“In saying that we had performances from some of our younger boys which is probably the most pleasing thing from the night.”
Younger VFL listed players Nash Holmes, Vic Carboni and Sam Heavyside were among the Bombers to take the game up to the rampant Scorpions along with a couple of veterans.
“Nash Holmes had a really good game I thought, his aggression in the contest and his effort and intent didn’t waiver for four quarters,” Corrigan said.
“Vic Carboni gave us some real drive and run off half back and kept taking the game on which is great to see. Sam Heavyside really played his role for four quarters, in a tough night those guys put their hands up which was good to see.
“Mathew Stokes made his return, he was fantastic and the feedback from the boys was that his attitude was also super.
“Jonathan Simpkin again found plenty of the footy in the middle for us and gave us plenty of drive and I thought Kyle Langford was pretty consistent as a midfielder-forward.”
Essendon will try to bounce back against the second-placed Williamstown after hefty back to back losses against Casey and Geelong.
Corrigan said there were some similarities between the two recent defeats.
“At the same time we take some positives out of the Casey game that probably weren’t there at Geelong in terms of our effort and intent was there, just sometimes our decision making and execution wasn’t where we would hope it would be,” he said.
“We are trying to address a few things during the week, hopefully the boys are still learning a lot from last week.”
Williamstown lost top spot on the VFL ladder following a four-point loss to Footscray on Sunday.
“We know Williamstown are a front half pressure side so we are going to have to accomodate that,” Corrigan said.
“The boys are really looking forward to the challenge; we know the areas where we are deficient so hopefully we see a better four quarter performance from the boys.”
Essendon will take on Williamstown at 12pm on Sunday. The match will be live on VFL Radio from 11.55am.
