Essendon recorded its sixth win for the season tonight and now has the challenge in front of them to win two games in succession. Geelong put in an honourable performance but Essendon had all of the answers. Damien Peverill was integral to Essendon’s 36-point victory and assistant coach Mark Harvey said it was definitely the best game he has seen him play this season. “Damien has obviously been under pressure in recent weeks and it was encouraging to see him come out and play like that and finish with 31 disposals,” Harvey said.

Damian Cupido was also an impressive contributor – he was dangerous in front of goal and finished with five majors. “It was a big positive for the team that Damian found the goals. We were pleased with his performance but I think it is important to note that Lloyd sacrificed his game and assisted in a number of those goals. Although the scoreboard doesn’t reflect it, he had a helping in hand in the eight goals Damian and Scott Lucas kicked between them,” Harvey said.

Apart from early in the match when Geelong kicked the first two goals, it was Essendon that led at every change. Harvey was pleased that the team was able to fend off every challenge Geelong threw at Essendon but was disappointed they didn’t capitalise on more forward opportunities in the second half. “We had the ideal start to the match kicking eight goals in the opening term and 13 to half-time, but we only kicked seven goals in the second half. That is something we will address during the week and ensure that we are running out matches in the same fashion we are starting,” the former Essendon player said.

The Bombers face St.Kilda next Friday night at the Dome and Harvey said the win is a good launching pad for the clash. “We know we have to win seven or eight out of the last 10 if we are any chance to make the finals. The win will give us momentum and hopefully we are able to string two wins together – something we have only managed to do once this season.”
