Merrett, who recently represented Vic Country at the U18 Championships, added he was enjoying developing his football under the likes of coach James Hird and Bomber Thompson.
“Being around some of the greats of the game, I suppose it is still a bit daunting but I’m going to try and learn as much as I possibly can,” Merrett said.
“I want to absorb as much as I can to try to improve my game, because we’re really learning from the best.”
Recruited from the Geelong Falcons, fast-paced Merrett - known for his exceptional speed and kicking ability - said he wishes to replicate Chris Judd’s and Dale Thomas’ abilities as players.
“I do admire both Chris Judd and Dale Thomas and the way they both go about their football.”
“From the club however, I really look up to Dyson Heppell because what he did in his first year was pretty inspirational. I’m hoping to learn a bit off him and take in as much as I can from Dys.”
Merrett admits his first days at the club have been daunting as he is surrounded by some of his AFL heroes.
“Coming to the club initially was a bit daunting to start off with, but now we’re very settled in and we’re starting to get used to what we have to do at the club,” he said.
“It has been a smooth transition and everyone has welcomed us in to the club.”
