Young key forward Harrison Jones will play game time this weekend in either the VFL or AFL after successfully rehabilitating an ankle injury.
The 21-year-old has battled separate ankle issues this season and will play his first match minutes since injuring his ankle four weeks ago.
Head of high performance Sean Murphy said Jones’ extensive rehabilitation will result in not limiting the tall forward to restricted minutes.
“Jonesy’s' going well,” Murphy told Essendon FC’s Liberty Financial Performance Update.
“He’s had a nice month of building back into his volumes and getting really confident with his jumping and landing and getting that ankle strong to stand the rigours of training and now games.
“He’s got to get through training this week, but the plan is to play some good game minutes. We’ve built him up, so we don’t have to restrict him too much, but we’ll see him running around this weekend which is great.”
As reported yesterday, midfielder Jye Caldwell has dodged any significant damage to his AC joint after a courageous back-with-the-flight contest against Swans defender Tom McCartin.
Murphy said Caldwell will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness for Saturday's Dreamtime at the 'G if his injury settles across the week.
“Caldwell is actually (looking) pretty good,” Murphy said.
“He has got an AC joint injury but it’s not too bad at this point. We've just got to see how that settles and test his availability later in the week, but we’ll leave that door ajar at this point.”
Small forward Devon Smith will be available for selection after overcoming illness.
Smith, who played in Essendon’s victory over Hawthorn, will look to regain his position in the best 22 as he enters full training this week.
“Unfortunately, he (Smith) fell ill with that flu or illness we had go through the club and that just meant he couldn’t travel up to Sydney, so he missed the game,” Murphy said.
“He’ll train fully across the week and be available for selection.”
Murphy also touched on injury updates to Patrick Voss, Nik Cox, Kyle Langford, Jake Stringer, Will Snelling and Michael Hurley.
