Forward Peter Wright admits the Bombers need to focus on the smaller details of their game plan to become more consistent across four quarters.
Wright kicked four goals in the 32-point defeat to the Western Bulldogs on Sunday and acknowledged the scoreline resulted from the Bombers’ turnovers.
Both sides had a similar number of turnovers on Sunday, but Wright said the Bulldogs managed to capitalise better on the Bombers’ mistakes.
“There were some really costly errors and little mistakes, that a quality side like the Bulldogs will always make you hurt on the rebound, so little things like that really hurt us,” Wright said.
“We’ve had really good patches of football throughout the season and on the weekend we were really happy with elements of our game, but it’s just about doing that for long enough.
“We found at times we get really good looks ahead of the ball but it’s just with the way the Bulldogs defend, we didn’t get it enough. But credit to them, they hurt us on turnovers and we weren’t good enough by hand."
Despite sitting 16th on the ladder with one win and six losses, Wright is confident in the Bombers’ game plan, saying once the team finds the balance in the way it moves the ball, performances will become more consistent.
“They are little things but they’re big things in the context of our game plan,” he said.
“I think we are finding that balance of how we move the ball forward and we really back our game plan in and the way we play so it’s just finding that balance and making sure we’re executing that at an AFL level.”
During their round seven game, the Bombers had 393 disposals at 79.4 per cent efficiency but only entered their forward 50 on 39 occasions.
The Bulldogs had 380 disposals at 43.9 per cent efficiency but unlike the Bombers, they managed to have 66 inside 50s, which they capitalised on by hitting the scoreboard.
vWith the Bombers having more possessions, Wright believes this is a result of how the team is attempting to clear the ball from a stoppage, whether through multiple handballs or kicking.
“A lot of our methods are how we take the ball out of a contest and I think at times we are just getting that balance wrong,” he said.
“Sometimes we need to take the ball to ground and understand it is going to be a scrappy game and not trying to play perfect football. We are definitely not stat chasers but just trying to play a method of finding the right balance."
The Bombers will strive to get back on the winner's list when they take on Hawthorn on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium.
