Nic Martin has capped off an incredible debut as the round one NAB AFL Rising Star nominee.
Despite not being AFL-listed just four weeks ago, Martin stamped himself as one of the most exciting youngsters in the competition after a five-goal, 27-disposal performance against Geelong on Saturday.
Martin was a shining light in a dour day for the Bombers, constantly presenting with smart running and clean skills to also collect 10 marks and have a disposal efficiency of 89 per cent.
It’s a phenomenal achievement for Martin after the young West Australian moved to Melbourne at the beginning of this year as one of four train-on players vying for the Bombers’ final two list spots.
Martin’s running capacity, football smarts and goalkicking are no secret to those who’ve seen the 20-year-old practice those traits for WA’s under-18 side in 2020 and in Subiaco’s WAFL League premiership last year.
Martin claimed the honour despite facing stiff competition for the round one nod after much-hyped draft selections Nick Daicos (Collingwood, 27 disposals) and Josh Rachele (Adelaide, five goals) put in their own starring performances.
Martin will be among 23 nominated players vying to become the overall 2022 NAB AFL Rising Star winner, with the winner to be awarded the Ron Evans Medal, along with $20,000 from NAB and a dedicated private banker.
Dyson Heppell (2011) and Andrew McGrath (2017) are the Bombers’ only Rising Star winners since the award’s inception in 1993.
