A new podcast series from the Essendon Women’s Network will highlight some of the AFL industry’s most prominent female figures, with trailblazer and AFLW star Daisy Pearce featuring in a compelling first episode.
Hosted by freelance sports writer Marnie Vinall, the Football Women of the Years podcast will feature previous Football Woman of the Year award winners including industry icons Bec Goddard, Breanna Brock, Kara Antonio, Peta Searle and Joan Eddy.
The Football Woman of the Year was first presented in 1998 and recognises a female in the industry who has made a significant, positive and measurable impact to the advancement of women in the game of Australian Football. The award categories are Football Woman of the Year, Emerging Leader, and Community.
EWN chair Lisa Egan said it was a privilege to present the new podcast series, which highlights the incredible contribution past Football Woman of the Year winners have made to the national football community.
“We are really proud to be showcasing some of the most prominent and talented females within the football community and hearing their own incredible stories,” Egan said.
“The Essendon Women’s Network continues to strive to recognise and celebrate the contribution of women to Australian Rules Football, and this new podcast series is an exciting extension of this objective.
“While we were disappointed the pandemic has impacted our ability to present the awards, we wanted to find a way to bring the EWN network together virtually to learn more about some very inspiring women in our industry. It’s so important to us to continue to promote women’s voices and inspire others. We also look forward to opening nominations for the 2022 Football Woman of the Year Awards commencing early next year.
“We thank each participant for selflessly giving up their time to be part of this podcast series. We also thank Marnie Vinall for her dedication in seeing this project come to life and we hope our audience really enjoys listening to this new series.”
A new episode will be released every Friday for a six-week period to coincide with the upcoming commencement of the 2022 AFLW season.
The podcast is currently available on Omny and Spotify, and will be coming to Google Podcasts and Apple Podcasts in the coming days.
