Never before in Australian sport has a club’s story been told so comprehensively or so openly.

Screening from Tuesday night on Fox Footy and Kayo over a four-week period, The Bombers: Stories of a Great Club is an eight-part documentary series in chronological order that was commissioned for the Bombers' 150-year celebrations in 2022.

This sweeping story shows how a suburban club evolved into an Australia-wide sporting brand. Along the way, the viewer is taken inside each of the eras, from the 19^th century through to preparations for the 2022 AFL season.

The first two episodes will be shown exclusively on Fox Footy and Kayo at 7:30pm and 8pm AEDT on Tuesday, October 19.

Here's what you can expect.

THE REIGN OF KING RICHARD
Episode 1, 7:30pm AEDT, Tuesday, October 19

This landmark series begins by establishing how the Essendon Football Club grew from a suburban club to a national icon. It introduces some of the key personalities in the club’s 150 years, who reveal how significant the Bombers have been in their lives.

The series opener features the era of ‘King Richard' - triple Brownlow medallist Dick Reynolds - in a time where good manners prevailed.

Among the stories told about Reynolds is the one about his match-up with Fitzroy champion Haydn Bunton in 1933.

Reynolds, in just his first season, was so thorough in his preparation that he went to the city the night before the game and followed Bunton, seeing how he moved and which way he turned during a shift as a floorwalker.

His dedication led to a best-on-ground performance that earned him three Brownlow votes in a sign of things to come.

This episode also includes the wonderful story of war hero and Bombers ornament Jack Jones.

THE SHOOTING STAR JOHN COLEMAN
Episode 2, 8pm AEDT, Tuesday, October 19

In the 1950s John Coleman was the superstar of Australian football.

In episode two, former Carlton, Hawthorn and Fitzroy coach David Parkin tells of when he was a child and would walk from one end of the ground to the other so he could see Coleman up close and personal.

Coleman’s stellar career ended dramatically with a knee injury, and in this documentary, Essendon champion Ted Fordham - one of Coleman's closest confidants - reveals why Coleman never played again.

BEHIND THE SCENES: HOW 'THE BOMBERS' DOCUSERIES CAME TO LIFE

Coleman later became an inspirational coach, inspiring Essendon to VFL premierships in 1962 and '65, before his untimely death at just 44. Fordham and other players get emotional in remembering the passing of Coleman and the impact he had on their lives.
