Two of Essendon’s younger players have undergone surgery over the past week, with the hope of returning to senior football this season.
Club doctor Bruce Reid confirmed both Nick Kommer and Will Hams would be sidelined from training for several weeks.
“With Will, he has had chronic trouble with his psoas tendon, and because he hasn’t really been able to train for about ten weeks, we needed to do that because we were really getting nowhere,” Reid said.
“We bit the bullet there, rather than waiting until the end of the year.
“With Nick, he has been really chronic with patella tendonitis which we rarely operate on but he’s had a very successful operation as well.
“So really for the long term, we’ve done that now rather than waiting until the end of the year. There is a chance, but we need to just get them right and when they’re ready, we’ll play them but we need to look long term with both of them.”
Reid also confirmed that Essendon defender Michael Hurley had pulled up fine following his heavy hit from Sydney player Dan Hannebery on Friday night.
“Michael was fine, it was a pretty nasty situation but apart from just some acute pain at the start he was really good,” he said.
“He didn’t even have pain after the game. He is out there training today and he is fine.”
Both Tom Bellchambers and David Myers also made their return from long-term injuries on Friday night, and Reid said the pair had recovered well.
“David is completely clear. He pulled up well, so he’ll be much better for having that game under his belt I would have thought,” he said.
“Tommy was also good, in fact his fitness held up pretty well. His ankle was minimally sore after the game but there is no setback at all and he is going very well."
