There were a number of big-name Essendon retirements at end of the 2008 season but none were bigger than that of Adam Ramanauskas.

With his famous number 9 guernsey waiting to be allocated to another Bomber, this week we ask in the poll: Who will wear Adam Ramanauskas’ number 9 in 2009?

Last week we asked which player was most likely to be Essendon captain in five-years time (2014) and first-year player David Myers received the popular vote.

Myers received 34.69% of the vote with ‘other’ in second with 30.14%, Jobe Watson was third with 15.87% and Lonergan fourth with 8%. Veterans Mark McVeigh and David Hille were the final two choices.

Here are what some of the fans had to say about who will be captain in 2014.

Stuart Ripper from Greensborough/Victoria says: I believe that if he can cement himself as either a half forward or midfield player, that Angus Monfries could be the next captain of Essendon. He is consistently putting his body on the line to win a contest, and even take a mark. His courage consistently goes unnoticed which is a shame for him.

Nicole Watson from Torquay, Victoria says: Will Hille and McVeigh be too old by 2014? Like the Myers and Watson option but surely Monfries should also be on the list. I consider him to have real leadership potential.

James from Berwick, Vic says: We are very blessed with our young guys and their leadership abilities. Myers, Lonergan, Nash, Prismall, Watson, Daniher, Gumby, Houli and Monfries. All these guys, can be the next captain. One of them should get it, appointing another late-20's bloke as captain, is stupid. The next captain should be our captain for a decade.

Jan Adams from New York City says: I think David Myers has got something special that will give the champion-like edge over the rest. He will be extremely important for the team in five-years time I believe.

Damian from Vic says: Prismall will captain this club just wait and see!! This kid will lead the troops to the next premiership!

Bob from Carlton says: Bachar Houli has shown leadership in the community and on the field. A real role model for all young kids and an obvious choice one day down the track.

Sean from Wheelers Hill says: I think Lloydy will give up the captaincy after this season, and then McVeigh or Hille will have it for two or three seasons before Myers is old enough which he will be (he'll be around 23). He will be our next seven plus year captain as Hirdy was.

Paul Drake from Canberra says: Jobe is a class player and a class person, an Essendon man down to his bootlaces. He is a really intelligent player, works in the midfield engine room and would be prominent around the ground. He has had to work harder than expected to become an elite player so he would be a good mentor to younger players with illusions about what it takes to make the grade. He is also quite articulate and by 2014 would be well equipped to communicate the coaching staff's instructions to the playing group.

Russy from Bendigo says: David Myers looks like he'll be some-what of a player. He has a big kick and strength for a player so young, great choice picking him up at pick five last year, he's also very good looking and very marketable for the EFC, could be the captain in 2014?, you never know.

Bruce Stringer from Traralgon says: Great footballers don’t necessarily make great leaders; “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities,” Albus Dumbledore to Harry Potter; JK Rowling.

Sarah from Victoria says: What about Angus Monfries?

Shane Dagnall from Perth WA says: What about Bachar Houli. Wouldn’t that be a great story but either McVeigh or Hille .. don’t know about Myers yet.

Twoltyboy from UK says: I feel either Angus Monfries or Andrew Welsh could turn out to be pretty influential leaders over the next few years.

Demi from Victoria says: David Myers could well be but I’m leaning towards new boy Prismall. The guy has great leadership qualities and should be a star if he recovers well from his injury

Jeremy from Tasmania says: Its got to be Kyle Reimers for future captaincy with all the leadership qualities.

John S from Carnegie says: Based on this year alone Woosha is real captaincy material. He showed on field leadership and is prepared to lead by example and is extremely hard working. Off field he has the respect of his teammates and from a club marketing perspective, is articulate and comfortable with media (50 metre penalty is brilliant!). He would do the club proud, the fans proud and his team mates proud. Go Woosha!

Caleb from Belmont says: David Myers will be a star of the future, if he isn't captain in five-years time he won't be far off it.

Brian Mckenna from Kingsbury Vic says: I think it will be David Myers, but then again here's hoping it is our first pick in this year’s draft, which could be Vickery, Yarran, Ziebel or with a lot of luck Watts. Would love to see Reimers take the next step and I can't question Bacher Houli's attitude and professionalism. Plenty of young leaders at Bomberland. Maybe Scotty Gumbleton may surprise a few this year .. here's hoping.
