Essendon Captain Jobe Watson has called on supporters to continue to rally behind the club.
The end of James Hird’s coaching tenure came at the end of a season littered with injuries to key players, big losses and the stress of a WADA appeal.
Watson praised the fans for their resilience and said they will play an important role in the future.
“I want to thank them for what they’ve done so far and if they can continue to rally and support the club, the future is bright, I honestly believe that,” he told Triple M.
“The loyalty and the passion that the Essendon supporters have shown over a long period of time, they have never wavered, they’ve always supported the playing group and the club.
“Obviously it’s been extremely tough and it’s been tough on them but they continue to turn up.
“They have love for the football club. They deserve success as much as any supporter group.”
The Bombers have won five games this season and Watson acknowledged the performances have been unacceptable.
“The playing group obviously hasn’t played to our expectations this year but I’m confident we can do that in the coming years,” he said.
“We as a playing group have let the coach down.
“One of the main reasons you get sacked is you haven’t won enough games.
“We need to come out and have more effort and more consistency than what we’ve shown.”
Matthew Egan will coach the side for the remaining three games this season as the search begins for a full-time replacement.
Watson said Egan’s knowledge of the playing group had him well placed to lead the side for the rest of the year.
“He brings continuity in terms of he’s been there for four years,” Watson said.
“He knows the playing group well.
“I’m not sure if Ego’s got aspirations to be a senior coach but I think he’ll provide a great knowledge of the playing group and he’s probably got the closest relationship over an extended period of time.”
