Could Marty Gleeson be Essendon’s next graduate into the midfield?
Now through three seasons at Bomberland, 2015 was clearly the dashing defender’s best to date, working hard to cement his spot in the senior side.
Playing every game, the 21-year-old oozed with class and poise beyond his years, establishing himself as one of the Bombers’ better ball users.
In 15 of his 22 games this year, Gleeson disposed of the ball at or above 80% disposal efficiency.
To put that in perspective, the AFL average among all clubs this season was just 72.9%, which puts Gleeson into an elite category.
Matthew Lloyd thinks that Gleeson would be more valuable to maintain his spot across the halfback line, highlighting just how important the role is.
“I think halfback is his spot,” Lloyd said.
“He sees the space in front of him and he takes it away from the opposition.
“A halfback flanker has become just as important as a midfielder with the strong decisions they need to make.”
Drafted as a skinny 18-year-old at the end of 2012, Gleeson has begun to grow in size and stature and is now starting to reap the benefits of his time spent in the gym during the off-season.
Lloyd says despite Gleeson’s build, the classy Don has all the attributes to be a consistent player for the Bombers for some time to come.
“He’s undersized but you know what you’re going to get every week from him,” Lloyd said.
“He’s competitive and hates losing a contest, and he uses the ball well.
“Marty should be proud with his efforts this season.”
